This is not the way we make our later bottled Negronis, but it is still exciting. Around 2014, it was the first time that we saw pHenomenal Tonic not just as a lemonade syrup, but as an undiluted cocktail ingredient in its own right. Thanks to the operators of the long-closed Savvy Bar in Hamburg.
What happens here is that this Negroni retains its characteristic bitter-sweet-alcoholic balance,
but the hint of tonic syrup with a reduced Campari content brings completely different complex bitter notes into play.
3 cl gin (e.g. Humboldt Rye Dry Gin)
3 cl red vermouth
2 cl Campari
1 cl pHenomenal tonic
Stir over ice cubes in a mixing glass and strain into a chilled cocktail glass or tumbler with a large ice cube. Garnish with orange zest if desired.
